All 6 LCPS Schools Labeled "Distinguished"

Louisa County Public Schools is celebrating outstanding academic results across the division, with all six schools earning a Distinguished rating under the Virginia Department of Education’s School Performance and Support Framework.

LCPS is one of just 14 school divisions statewide whose schools all received Distinguished ratings, the framework’s highest performance designation. Of the 131 school divisions in Virginia, less than 11% earned division-wide Distinguished ratings.

“These results are a reflection of the amazing people we have on our team," said LCPS superintendent Doug Straley. "Our educators and support staff come to work every day with a positive attitude, high expectations, and a willingness to do whatever it takes for our students."

"Having all six schools earn Distinguished ratings is something our entire community can celebrate," Straley added. "The support we receive from this community plays a key role in our overall success."

Alongside those ratings, preliminary 2025–2026 assessment results place LCPS among Virginia’s top 10 school divisions in every subject listed:

Mathematics: sixth statewide, with an 85.00% pass rate.
Science: ninth statewide, with an 81.07% pass rate.
History and Social Studies: ninth statewide, with an 81.04% pass rate.
Reading: tenth statewide, with an 82.46% pass rate.

LCPS exceeded the statewide pass rate in every subject, including margins of more than 12 percentage points in mathematics and 10 percentage points in science.

Louisa County High School also delivered exceptional results. Among the high schools included in the regional comparison, LCHS earned the following rankings:

Mathematics: first, with a 98.27% pass rate.
Science: first, with a 90.22% pass rate.
Reading: second, with a 90.74% pass rate.

In comparison with other schools in the region, Louisa County Middle School as yielded impressive results, including:

Mathematics: third, with an 80.71% pass rate.
History and Social Studies: third, with an 80.99% pass rate.
Reading: fourth, with an 81.07% pass rate.
Science: fourth, with a 76.43% pass rate.

Finally, at the elementary level, LCPS continued to see tremendous results when compared to other schools in the region, including:

Trevilians Elementary ranked first in mathematics and History and Social Studies, with pass rates of 90.35% and 90.00%, respectively, and second in reading, at 86.54%.
Thomas Jefferson Elementary ranked third in mathematics, with an 89.77% pass rate, and fourth in reading, at 82.12%.
Jouett Elementary ranked fifth in History and Social Studies and science, with pass rates of 82.73% and 79.80%, respectively.
Moss-Nuckols Elementary ranked fifth in reading, with an 80.36% pass rate.

Together, these achievements reflect the dedication of LCPS educators and support staff, the hard work of students, and the continued support of families and community partners. They demonstrate success across the division, from elementary classrooms through high school.

LCPS Earns Top Marks from Niche

Louisa County Public Schools has once again been recognized among the top school divisions in Virginia, earning four impressive statewide rankings in the latest rankings released by Niche.

LCPS earned the following distinctions:

#1 — Districts with the Best Teachers in Virginia (out of 130 school divisions)
#1 — Best School Districts for Athletes in Virginia (out of 129 school divisions)
#2 — Best Places to Teach in Virginia (out of 130 school divisions)
#5 — Best School Districts in Virginia (out of 130 school divisions)

The results place LCPS among Virginia's highest-ranked school divisions across academics, teaching, workplace culture, and athletics.

“These rankings are a reflection of the incredible people who make up TeamLCPS,” Superintendent J. Douglas Straley II said. “Our educators and staff come to work every day with a positive attitude and a willingness to do whatever it takes to support our students. When you combine that dedication with the tremendous support we receive from our families and community, special things happen.”

Niche evaluates school districts using a variety of data sources and factors, including academics, teachers, student and parent experiences, extracurricular opportunities, and other measures.

At LCPS, the recognition represents a true team accomplishment. From students and staff to families and community partners, the entire #TeamLCPS community plays a role in helping the division continue its pursuit of excellence.

“We are incredibly proud of this team,” Straley added. “These rankings are worth celebrating, but they also motivate us to keep working, Brick By Brick, to provide the very best opportunities possible for every student we serve.”

Flu Season Info

Dear Parent/Guardian:

The Department of Health recommends the following measures to prevent the spread of influenza in the school population:

Encourage good hygienic practices at home.

Wash hands often with soap and water, especially after being around someone who is sick.
Cover your mouth and nose with a disposable tissue when coughing or sneezing or use your upper sleeve, but do not use your hands.
Dispose of facial tissues that contain nasal secretions after each use. Wash hands afterward.
Avoid touching the eyes, nose, or mouth.
Routinely clean commonly touched surfaces, toys, etc. as recommended.

Reduce the spread of illness.

Individuals should stay home from school, work, and errands when sick.
According to the LCPS Student Code of Conduct, students or staff who are sick should remain home until they are fever-free for a full 36 hours without fever-reducing medication.
Avoid close contact with people who are sick.

Talk to your healthcare provider about flu vaccination.

The single best way to protect against flu is to get vaccinated. All persons aged 6 months and older are recommended to be vaccinated annually, with rare exceptions. It is also recommended that healthy children 2 to 8 years of age receive the nasal spray flu vaccine instead of the flu shot.
Influenza vaccination is usually 70-90% effective in preventing the flu in healthy persons.
Receiving flu vaccine later in the season can still provide important protection since flu viruses can circulate as late as May.
Most individuals will be protected against influenza within 2 weeks after vaccination.

Antiviral medications may be used.

These may also be used to prevent or treat the flu. Talk to your healthcare provider for more information. Enhance influenza awareness.

The workshop will take place at Jouett Elementary School.

School Supply Lists!

At the secondary level (LCHS and LCMS), teachers will provide students with a list of recommended school supplies during Open House (Thursday, August 6) and the first week of school. For the start of the school year, students are asked to bring basic school supplies with them, such as looseleaf paper (college-ruled), spiral notebooks, and pencils.

And just like last year, we also want to provide all LCPS families with a few reminders that will help guide you as you make purchases in the near future. These reminders will help students avoid items that do not correlate with our school's weapons detectors.

- All three-ring binders should be 1.5 inches or less.

- When possible, please use plastic water bottles. If you do purchase metal water bottles, please opt for small/medium-sized bottles.

- Please avoid purchasing wheeled, rolling backpacks if possible.

- Please do not purchase adult-sized scissors. Instead, opt for blunt, small/medium-sized scissors.

DETAILS: Black History Month Trivia Contest

Greetings #TeamLCPS 5th-Grade Families!

On behalf of Louisa County Public Schools, we are excited to announce that LCPS will be hosting its eighth annual Black History Month Trivia Contest during the month of February! This exciting contest is sponsored by LCHS graduate, Kerry Wynn (Class of 2009), and The Kerry Wynn “Why Not Me?” Foundation. Kerry is a former NFL defensive lineman and – most importantly – a perfect example of the qualities we value here at #TeamLCPS! This contest is very near and dear to Kerry, and we are honored to partner with him to host it!

The 2026 Black History Month Trivia Contest is specifically for all 5th-grade students at Louisa County Public Schools. We have provided all 5th-grade students with a comprehensive study guide. Between the dates of January 26 and February 6, each elementary school will be asking students to take a short, 25-question quiz. While taking the quiz, students will need to use their school-issued device, and they will not be allowed to use the internet for any other purpose than to take the quiz. Your child’s teacher will provide more details about when your child’s classroom-level quiz will be conducted.

The top four scorers at each of our four elementary schools will be invited to the division competition at Louisa County Middle School in late February. Should your child qualify for that competition, we will provide further details so that your student can join us for the event! We are excited to say that Kerry also plans to attend the event!

Here’s some more exciting news! The top three finishers in the division competition will each receive a cash prize:

1st Place - $100

2nd Place - $75

3rd Place - $50

The study guide included with this letter is to be used for both the classroom-level and division-level contests. We would love for all students to participate. However, this is not a mandatory competition. If you would prefer your child not to participate, please let your child’s teacher know that they will not be participating.

At #TeamLCPS, we cherish the impact that African Americans have made throughout history. This contest is a great way for your child to learn many incredible facts and tidbits about African American history, culture, and traditions!

If your child’s study guide gets lost or damaged, please email woolfoal@lcps.k12.va.us for a replacement copy. The study guide is also available online on your school’s website as well as our division website, lcps.k12.va.us.
