Graduation Requirements

To graduate from Louisa County Public Schools, a student must meet all requirements set forth in the Standards of Accreditation and Standards of Quality. Parents of rising eleventh and twelfth-grade students will be notified of the number of standards and verified units of credit required for graduation and the remaining number of credits the individual student requires for graduation.

Graduation RequirementsRequirements for graduation vary for transfer students. They depend on the time of year and the student’s grade level at transfer. Consult a school counselor for specific requirements.

The Louisa County School Board will award diplomas and certificates to all secondary school students, including students who transfer from nonpublic schools or from home instruction, who earn the units of credit prescribed by the Board of Education, pass the prescribed tests, and meet any other requirements that are prescribed by the School Board and approved by the Board of Education.

The Standard and Advanced Studies diplomas require students to earn 22 and 26 standard credits, respectively. Students must also earn a board-approved career and technical education credential to graduate with a Standard Diploma and must also successfully complete one virtual course, which may be non-credit bearing, to graduate with either a Standard or Advanced Studies Diploma.

Credit accommodations now provide alternatives for students with disabilities in earning the standard and verified credits required to graduate with a Standard Diploma. The IEP team must convene to make the determination for a student to earn the credit accommodations needed.

Credit accommodations for students with disabilities may include:

-  Alternative courses to meet the standard credit requirements
-  Modifications to the requirements for locally awarded verified credits
-  Additional tests approved by the Board of Education for earning verified credits
-  Allowance of work-based learning experiences through career and technical education courses.

Students who were first-time ninth graders before the 2018-2019 school year must also earn 6 verified credits required to graduate with a Standard Diploma or 9 for an Advanced Studies Diploma. Beginning with students who entered the ninth grade for the first time during and after the 2018-2019 school year, 5 verified credits are needed to graduate with a Standard or Advanced Diploma.
