Youth of Virginia Speak Out About Traffic Safety

LOUISA COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL

YOVASO fulfills it's mission by working with high schools, middle schools, and youth groups to establish youth-led advocacy programs throughout the Commonwealth. These peer-to-peer programs enable students to work collaboratively in either a school-based service-learning club or community youth group to develop teen-friendly strategies for addressing their number one health concern- motor vehicle crashes. YOVASO focuses on three important strategies in reaching its mission:

• Engage youth at the school and community level through peer-to-peer traffic safety programs that are innovative, impactful, and hands-on.

• Educate youth on how to be safer and more responsible drivers, passengers, pedestrians, and bicyclists through peer-led campaigns, competitions, interactive programs, and social media messaging.

• Empower youth with the responsibility, knowledge, and skills to influence a safe driving attitude (culture) in their schools and communities.

2020 Virtual Campaign

What it is...

This exciting new, virtual campaign kicks off Monday, September 21 with the campaign concluding on Friday, October 23. The goal of the campaign is to influence teens to form a lifelong buckle up habit by reminding them that seat belts are their best defense against injury and death in a crash. The campaign also emphasizes the importance of driving the speed limit and passenger rights at the middle school level.

Why we do it...

The goal of the Drive for Change Campaign is to help students form lifelong, buckle up habits through education and awareness. The campaign also focuses on encouraging teens to slow down and obey posted speed limits.

Watch Louisa County High School's very own Alexis Downy on WFXR discussing the #DriveforChange campaign (October 2, 2020).

Parent Contest

Parents and guardians can get involved, too!

This year's fall campaign encourages parents to work with their young driver on a Parent-Teen Driving Agreement and to regularly discuss driver and passenger safety with their teen. At the middle school level, parents will be encouraged to discuss passenger safety and rights with their middle schooler and to also work on a Parent-Youth Passenger Safety Agreement. Parents who sign an Agreement and take the online pledge, will be entered to win $50 from YOVASO! For more information visit the Campaign Page (https://www.yovaso.org/driveforchange)
